How to Help Your Dyslexic Child

Treating dyslexia is not like treating a medical issue. Dyslexia never goes away, and it cannot be outgrown. As a result, the best treatment is intense, one-on-one tutoring and remediation. Therefore, using a Structured Literacy program can help your dyslexic child thrive. Your child can learn the skills they need to succeed, overcoming some of the struggles students with dyslexia often face. Above all, this includes difficulties with reading, spelling, and writing.

The Reading Tutor AZ utilizes one of the top programs, specifically, the Barton Reading & Spelling System a multi-sensory, Structured Literacy program. This tutoring system is based on Orton-Gillingham principles and is a trusted name in helping your dyslexic child.

Target Tutoring Areas

Reading

The Barton program strengthens the weak phonemic awareness skills that typically accompanies dyslexia.

For example, the program provides students with sufficient practice in hearing, isolating, repeating, and manipulating phonemes to improve their processing skills.

Next, once the student has reached a certain level, we move on to using graphemes and reading words.

Finally, as the students move through the program, reading individual words leads to reading phrases, then reading sentences, and finally reading paragraphs!

Spelling

Being unable to spell common words can lower a child’s self-confidence and make it difficult to ace writing assignments.

However, that’s where I can help! First, I teach students how to sound out certain words and match the sounds to letters. Next, I provide our students with a toolbox of spelling rules that show them how to spell more difficult words.

Sight words—words that do not follow the spelling rules, which the child cannot sound out—are particularly hard for those with dyslexia to learn how to spell (and read). These words, such as “what” and “you,” simply have to be memorized.

Therefore, I check each students’ ability to read and spell sight words to target the ones they need to work on together.

Writing

Writing can often be one of the most difficult tasks for a dyslexic student.

While working on reading and spelling, I provide support for writing, including grammar and punctuation, which can be difficult for students with dyslexia.

My Approach to Learning

I offer private, one-on-one tutoring rather than group tutoring. This method enables me to meet the needs of every child, above all through individualized instruction. My private lessons allow me to build relationships with my students. Ultimately, this includes discovering and adapting to each student’s unique learning style. The main program I use is the Barton Reading & Spelling System, a multi-sensory, Structured Literacy program. What folks are saying about Hallie Botkin

Kristi W

I couldn’t be ANY more thankful for the Ms. Botkin. My daughter has severe dyslexia and tested at a kindergarten level in 7th grade. We did all kinds of therapies and nothing helped her. Until, she was tutored with Ms.Botkin for two years. She began high school 2 months ago and she has ALL A’s! It’s truly heartbreaking to see your child work so hard and struggle everyday at school. Hallie Boykin has changed her life. We are incredibly thankful for her and all she has done to help our girl. I can’t recommend her enough. We will be forever grateful!

Zac (Former Student)

My life has forever been changed with the help of Ms. Botkin. After struggling in school for many years, I began receiving tutoring in middle school and successfully completed college, and I have my dream job. Ms. Botkin gave me the gift of reading, and I will be forever grateful.

Ms. Botkin was a life changer for my daughter. She is now a Senior in HS and has A’s in ELA ! Thank you so much!

FAQs

What is Dyslexia?

“Dyslexia is a language-based learning disability. Dyslexia refers to a cluster of symptoms, which result in people having difficulties with specific language skills, particularly reading. Students with dyslexia usually experience difficulties with other language skills such as spelling, writing, and pronouncing words.”

-The International Dyslexia Association

(DLC FAQ)

Do you only tutor people with dyslexia?

No, we also tutor students who simply need help learning to read or need to strengthen an area of reading. For example, areas like comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary.

Learning to read is not a natural skill we are born with; that is to say, it must be taught. We teach reading using a systematic, explicit, and multi-sensory approach to reading.

Research the Barton Reading and Spelling System for more information.

(DLC FAQ)

What commitment is required?

I require a minimum of two, one-on-one sessions a week, each lasting an hour, starting at $50.00 per hour.

More than 2 hours a week is fine, but less will not work.

During these sessions, your child will begin to see and feel adequate progress, which helps them to gain confidence and retain the information learned. As a result, once children become confident in the work they do during their sessions, they will begin to apply their newly acquired knowledge to their academic studies.
